I absolutely love and envy the freedom with which our grandkids take to any of the musical instruments that we have around - especially the keyboards - no matter if it’s the old 88 key upright, the toy piano, or either of the electric keyboards/midi controllers - when they visit, they play whatever they want and think nothing of what it “should be”. As I listened to one of our grandchildren’s musings recently, I was struck with memories Art Tatum meets Thelonius Monk. The grandchild looked at me and asked if they could record something and have me add some things - I said sure, and then proceeded to realize what a daunting task that actually was - but messed around with it until I came up with something somewhat “interesting”.
So here it is - after listening to it they said “Cool!”
In my imagination, I hear and see a lounge musical group after all the customers have left and the staff is cleaning up - the piano is playing “outside” of any particular scales, chords or genres, while the rest of the group plays, somewhat wearily, clearly ready to go home - something to accompany it as best they can.
Let me know what images get stirred for you.
